THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS

In the new church

in the old church

Since the time of the Crusades, Christians have loved to make pilgrimages to the Holy Land to see the places where Jesus Christ lived and especially to visit the city of Jerusalem and walk the path from Pilate's Palace, where Jesus was condemned, to the Hill of Calvary - the Via Dolorosa.

As only the privileged could afford to make the journey to Palestine, it became a custom in churches in Europe to place fourteen pictures depicting scenes fron the Passion with a wooden cross under each picture - these were known as the Staions of the Cross.

Then the devotion of the Way of the Cross grew - praying and meditating as one moved from one station to another - pausing and reflecting on the scene portrayed.

In the new church we have new Stations of the Cross, the design of the same artist who inspired the figures of the Madonna and Risen Christ. He gives us fourteen faces of the Suffering Saviour with their titles underneath. The faithful will find much to stimulate the mind as they pause and ponder on the event recalled as they behold the poignant and sad features before them.
