THE SHRINE OF OUR LADY

The Augustinians foster devotion to Our Lady under the title of Mother of Good Counsel. The original fresco of Mary, Mother of Good Counsel dates back to the Middle Ages and is on the wall of the Augustinian Basilica in the town of Genazzano situated about thirty kilometres from Rome. So many favours were obtained through her intercession the shrine became a place of pilgimage and popular devotion. Many of the Popes had devotion to Mary under this title and one Mariam Congress called the Mother of Good Counsel the Madonna of the Popes. Pope John XXIII was the last Pontiff to make a pilgimage to the shrine.

Our figure of the Mother of Good Counsel is the work of Mr. Cauchi. He belongs to the great tradition of catholic artists whose work is a statement of personal faith as well as an expression of creative insight. This figure of Mother and Son is in ceramic. The flowing lines of the sculpture evoke a sense of restfulness, serenity and peace - in a word, the prayerfulness of Mary. It tries to lead us into the stillness of God.
