THE LECTERN
Looking at the Santuary from the centre isle the lectern is immediately to the left of the altar. Apart from the altar it is the most oustanding feature in the Sactuary. Its purpose is immediately obvious; it is the place from which the Word of God is read and proclaimed.
In its place of prominence next to the altar the lectern is very clearly linked with what goes on on the altar. The Mass, or the Eucharist as it now more often called ["Eucharist" simply means "thanksgiving" in Greek], is made up of the Penitential Rite, the Liturgy of the Word, the Liturgy of the Euchrist and the Communion Rite. The Liturgy of the Word - the Readings, Responsorial Psalm and Homily - prepare those taking part in the Eucharist to participate with more Faith. The simplicity of the Lectern, with its clean lines and simple cross motif is a visble expression of the simplicity of God's Word.
