THE RESURRECTION
The Church has always encouraged the arts, recognising in them a powerful means of communicating the christian message. The artist is always striving to carry us beyond ourselves; he reaches down to the inner man and speaks to the heart. So Michaelangelo, in his painting of creation gives the face of Adam a look of unspeakable longing as he looks towards God for life; it is the longing in the heart of every man for life in God's Spirit.
The sculture of the new Adam, the Risen Christ which fills the apse in the new church, is also about life. Mr. Cauchi captures that moment of intense vitality when Jesus, comes alive in the Spirit, casts aside the shroud and exults in the fulness of his glorified humanity. This work is cast in fibre-glass with a bronze finish. The figure is idealised and communicates through the planes and lines of the body as well as the light swirling movement of the shroud, the release of an enourmous flood of sheer joyous energy. This is not a restoration to life but a resurrection to Life Eternal. It is the fulfillment of Jesus' words: "I am the Resurrection and the Life: whoever believes in me, though he should die will come to life: and whoever is alive and believes in me will never die." [John 11:26].
