SAINT MARY'S SCHOOL



SOME OUTSTANDING DATES


1870
The first beginnings of St. Mary's Parish, the Passionists come to Harborne and purchase a disused Methodist Chapel in Heath Road, now the High Street.

1871
Schoolroom erected behind the chapel. Mrs. K. Rigby, first catholic teacher in Harborne.

1873
The purchase of Harborne Lodge in Lodge Road, now Vivian Road.

1874
The Old Chapel House was turned into a school. The conservatory of Harborne Lodge was made into a temporary chapel.

1876
A classroom was built beside the monastery. [later demolished].

1895
Foundation Stone of the new school laid by Canon McCave D.D., for two classrooms, cloakrooms and two toilets in the top playground. This original Foundation Stone was removed to the entrance of the present school when the Parish Centre was built on the site.

1895
The new classroom can be seen on the extreme left of the picture.
A short
brick wall joined the classroom to the church and a doorway was put in the middle.

1899
Miss. M. Nolan, second Headteacher.

1926
Miss. M. McHugh, third Headteacher.

1935
Mr. W. J. Griffin, fourth Headteacher.

1936
Two Infant Classrooms, cloakrooms and lower playground added,
which is now a car park. The corridor extension was added much later.

1954
The Ministry of Education granted St. Mary's School "Aided" status.

1955
New school block containing Classrooms, Hall, Headteachers Office, Staff room, kitchen and indoor toilets built.

1963
Three new classrooms, medical room, store rooms and additional toilets built in the field behind the Hall.

1958
Mr. L. L. Boden, fifth Headteacher.

1971
New entrance porch added to celebrate the Centenary of the first school in Harborne High Street and blessed by Fr. Hubert, on January 16th. 1971.

?1986
Mrs. Fitzpatrick, sixth Headteacher.

1969
March 1969 saw the sudden death of Miss. Edith Lloyd who had been on the school staff for many, many years. She had been the Deputy Head for 33years.

2001
Miss. Helena Cusack, seventh Headteacher.
