WHAT IS FAIRTRADE?

'Ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they support CAFOD'

What is Fairtrade?

  • A fair price/wage for producers
  • A relationship of partnership and co-operation
  • Clear benefits to the producer
  • Safe and non-exploitative working conditions

For 120,000 producers in poor countries throughout the world, Fairtrade has made a big difference. And we can now enjoy a Fairtrade breakfast with bananas and orange juice as well as coffee, tea, cocoa, honey and sugar.

This would not be possible without the support of people like YOU! But the job is not yet over. There are still many farmers who want to sell to the fairtrade market. More people knowing about Fairtrade products and buying them as a regular part of their weekly shopping means more farmers are getting a better deal and others can join the Fairtrade scheme because of the demand.

We still need YOUR help to build on this progress. Fairtrade Fortnight is a great opportunity to spread the word during 5th. to 18th. March. Also once a month there is a Fairtrade stall in the parish centre run by the St. Mary's CAFOD group after the 9.30am. and 11.00am. Masses so please look out for the dates in the newsletter or on the CAFOD notice board in the church porch.

There are many Fairtrade products in your local supermarkets too so do please look out for them and buy them, especially in Sainsbury's! If any supermarkets are not selling Fairtrade products perhaps you could ask the managers to begin with one or two items and then later ask them to extend the products!
