Simon and Garfunkel - 7 O’clock News / Silent Night (6B)
"7 O'Clock News/Silent Night" features the overlaid sound of a news bulletin during the rendition of the Christmas Carol “Silent Night.” It describes misuse of narcotics, murders, and the calling out of the National Guard in the United States against demonstrations by Martin Luther King supporters; and it also contains clips from the news broadcast about demonstrators against the Vietnam War and information about the Vietnam War itself. Based on the fact that the broadcast carries the news of the death of comedian Lenny Bruce that day, it can be dated from August 3, 1966. It is a poignant reminder that despite the real message of Christmas there is war and conflict throughout the world, even today!
