Amilcare Ponchielli (1834 -1886) was an Italian composer, mainly of operas, the most popular piece today being “Dance of the Hours.” This tune was the setting for Maureen Evans’s hit “Like I Do” which reached number 3 in the UK top ten charts. The following year it was the setting for “Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh” (A Letter from camp) by Allan Sherman and was the Grammy-winning novelty song based on letters Allan Sherman received from his son attending Camp Champlain, New York.
