Have you ever wondered how Winnie the Pooh got its name? Well, during the First World War an army unit from Manitoba [Canada] took along a brown bear-cub as its mascot. This cub was purchased on August 24th. 1914 on the railway platform at White River, Ontario, by Lieutenant Harry Colebourn, a Canadian Army Veterinary, while en route overseas with the Second Canadian Infantry Brigade.
He named it "Winnie" after his home town, the city of Winnipeg. The bear cub was eventually left in the care of London Zoo whilst Lt. Colebourn served in France. In 1919 he gave the bear to the Zoo on a permanent basis until it died in 1934. It was this bear that the author of the stories, A. A. Milne, eventually met with his son Christopher and based his Pooh stories on in 1926. You can celebrate Pooh's 75th. BIRTHDAY HERE.

to see ALL of Pooh's friends!!I've recently been informed that White River, Ontario, is the official home of Winnie the Pooh and this has been recognised by Disney and the son of Capt. Harry Colburne of Winnipeg. In Ontario there is a wooden carved statue of the Captain, and Winnie; and at the Visitor Center is a 12-foot statue of Winnie in a tree, designed by DISNEY.
